Time for Round Three

The third round of the JSRA Metro Series gets underway this Saturday night at the Perth Motorplex as drivers compete in the City of Kwinana Cup!

An almost identical field of cars have nominated for this weekend’s showdown, with only one car from the first round not running.

Heading the field is of course the WA Champion Blake Iwanow who won the opening night feature and has so far swept all before him in Junior Sedan competition this season. He also leads the Perth Motorplex Track Championship and comes into this weekend’s showdown as a red hot favourite.

Kayne Dellar did all he could to get past Iwanow at the last show but couldn’t quite pull it off, finishing second in every race. Dellar has shown that he has the speed to match it with Iwanow and with a little bit of luck, could elevate himself onto the top step of the podium this Saturday night.

Bryden Southwell finished third in all the heat races at the last Motorplex show before being credited with fifth place in the opening feature to be sitting third overall in the Track Championship. Again a competitor who has shown much car speed over recent shows, Southwell could be one to watch come feature time.

Chloe Dellar broke through for a third place finish in the last show and would love to repeat that this Saturday, while Izak Davies and Jasmine Arnold round out the Top Star fields and are hopeful of recording strong results.

Brock Lake and Olivia Earle are the sole New Stars nominated for this weekend, but after a great battle in all races at the last show, can be expected to pick up right where they left off this weekend.

It will be another great show for the division and the Junior Sedans will get three six lap heats prior to their ten lap feature, with the first race scheduled to be held at 5.30pm, so make sure you are at the track early!

Records Reset

Tonight at the Perth Motorplex Blake Iwanow reset the record books on his way to claiming yet another feature win this year.

Iwanow was all class all night, claiming three heat wins from three starts and despite setting a new one lap and six lap record in the second heat, didn’t have it all his own way as Kayne Dellar stepped up and really took it to the State Champion.

Courtesy of his three heat wins, Iwanow would start from pole position in the ten lap feature with Dellar on his outside and as the green flag flew Iwanow went straight to the lead hotly pursued by Dellar who came within a sniff in the third heat, while third placed Bryden Southwell was further back.

Dellar simply would not give up as he doggedly pursued Iwanow, but could not quite close the gap on Iwanow enough to make a passing maneuver.

Even going three wide through traffic didn’t slow Iwanow down, in fact, he judged it so well that while Dellar got caught up, he went from a tiny gap in the lead to be nearly three seconds ahead with three laps to go.

Shortly after, the yellows would come on as Olivia Earle found herself facing the wrong way on the back straight, bunching up the field for a restart with three laps to go.

On the restart Dellar went low and drew alongside Iwanow, but Iwanow continued to use the mid track line and maintained his lead once again, racing away and claiming the win, his third at the Motorplex venue, ahead of Kayne Dellar and Chloe Dellar who despite crossing the line in fifth, was advanced to third after Bryden Southwell and Izak Davies were each relegated at the conclusion of the race.

The New Stars only had a small field and would race in with the Top Stars, Brock Lake eventually getting the biccies over Olivia Earle while Locky Comley, in just his third ever race meeting, made heavy contact with the front straight wall in the opening heat and would take no further part in the evenings proceedings.

The JSRA are back in action next weekend with the first round of the Country Series to be held at Moora Speedway on the 9thof November, and with solid nominations already received, it should be another good show.

Juniors to the Motorplex!

For the first time this season the Junior Sedans will head to the high banks of the Perth Motorplex as part of the Metro Series, with nine nominations received.

The opening round of the series was held just over a fortnight ago at Ellenbrook Speedway with Blake Iwanow taking out the first feature win of the JSRA season and he will be keen to continue that form. Iwanow already has two career wins at the Motorplex venue, both in the last season and now, fresh off not just his feature win at Ellenbrook plus another last weekend at Bunbury in a non-series race) but also after being crowned the Junior Sedan Track Championship at Ellenbrook Speedway, as well as the overall club champion, he will be a tough nut to crack.

Kayne Dellar came home second at Ellenbrook and was fifteenth overall at the Perth Motorplex last season. He has nominated for this weekend and will be keen to take it to Iwanow, but will see a serious challenge from Izak Davies who was second in the Perth Motorplex Track Championship last season with two podium results. He has previously grabbed one feature win at the venue and came home eighth in the opening round of this years Series and will now be keen to bounce back with an even better result this Saturday night.

Bryden Southwell was third overall last year at the Perth Motorplex with two podium finishes, but has yet to break through for that elusive feature win. He was fourth in the opening feature at Ellenbrook a couple of weeks ago and will be keen to better that result while Chloe Dellar is also in the field having come home fifth in the opening round feature. She too has competed at the Motorplex previously, 25th overall in last years series while Jasmine Arnold, who was an unfortunate DNF in the opening round, was twelfth overall last year at the Motorplex with a twelfth and a DNF in the two rounds she contested. All three of these drivers are in the field and will be keen for big results this Saturday night.

Some of the newer drivers in the field are also capable of turning heads. Olivia Earle was fifth overall in her first year at the Perth Motorplex and has had a solid off season, while Brock Lake is also back this Saturday night having run just one show here at the venue last season. Even newer than these two drivers though is Locky Comley who will be competing in just his third ever meeting, simply excited to be racing where his idols raced!

It will be another great show for the division and the Junior Sedans will get three six lap heats prior to their ten lap feature, with the first race scheduled to be held at 5.30pm, so make sure you are at the track early!

Iwanow and Smith Claim Opening Night Honours

As one season ends, another one begins and such was the case at Ellenbrook Speedway last night as the track hosted its final event for the 2019 season, with the JSRA holding the opening round of the 2019/20 Metro Series.

A good field of eleven Top Stars and sixteen New Stars front for action and they certainly put on a show throughout the evening, with three and four wide racing across both divisions.

In the Top Stars Beau Oldfield claimed the opening heat while Blake Iwanow was first across the line in the second, the duo qualifying on the front row for the twelve lap feature event.

As the race went green Oldfield would race away into the lead as Iwanow, debuting a brand new car, dropped to fourth. Kayne Dellar and Bryden Southwell would move to second and third respectively, but it only took Iwanow a lap to get back by Southwell for third and then another lap to pass Dellar for second.

Iwanow then set out after Oldfield, chasing him down and making the pass for the lead on lap seven. Oldfield didn’t give up and fought back but was unable to make the move, Iwanow going on to claim yet another feature win at Ellenbrook Speedway for the season, while Oldfield was second and Dellar held on for third.

In the New Star division, Tylah Steele and Olivia Smith shared the opening round heat wins while Jasmin Kennedy and Lexi Smith grabbed wins in the second round. These four drivers would start in the front two rows for the feature, with Lexi Smith getting the jump and racing away from Kennedy, Steele and sister Olivia.

Kennedy would drop back to fifth on the second lap, with Olivia Smith making the moves to grab second while Tylah Steele would drop to fourth as Axel Fiedler made his presence felt amongst the very quick group of females.

Steele would pass Fiedler back for third shortly after, the top three of Smith, Smith and Steele racing away and despite fighting through heavy lapped traffic, the order would remain unchanged as they crossed the line. Despite this, stewards would deem Steele to have made contact with another car earlier in the race and relegate her to fifth, leaving Lexi Smith officially the winner from Olivia Smith and Kennedy.

The next round of the JSRA Metro Series will be the 2nd of November at the Perth Motorplex.

Buzzard and Day Triumph

jsra-logo-transCarnarvon’s Jack Buzzard and Narrogin’s Brody Day, last night claimed the 2019 Fab Martinelli Cup, which doubled as the 2019 North West Championships at Carnarvon Speedway.

After a great first night of racing action, night two again promised great things and the Junior Sedan competitors surely did not disappoint.

Travis Strelley started the night with a heat win in the New Star Junior Sedans, before local hero Jack Buzzard would taste success for the first time of the night.

Come the feature race, Buzzard and Strelley would start on the front row, with Buzzard making the better jump and leading into the first turn. Strelley was slow to move away, which allowed Jayden Blackburn to move his Hyundai Excel up into second position. It wouldn’t be long and Strelley would soon start to attack the back bumper of Jayden Blackburn, making his way past for second.

Buzzard continued to lead and withstood some late race challenges from Travis Strelley, who was trying everything to get past. Jack Buzzard would go on to record the feature race win, which included two crowns; the Fab Martinelli Cup and North West Championships. Travis Strelley would finish a gallant second ahead of Jayden Blackburn, Jaidyn Turner and Jacob Bell.

Brody Day and Kurtis Blackburn began the night in the best possible way, winning their opening heats of the night in the Top Star Junior division. Geraldton’s Rory Elsum-Beaumont returned for night two of action, after not completing a race on Saturday evening and won the third heat of the night, before Brody Day would again defeat his fellow competitor to go through the qualifying heats undefeated.

Brody Day would start the twenty lap feature from pole position courtesy of his two heat race wins, as the final race of the weekend for the juniors promised greatness. The charge of the light brigade would come from behind, as Kurtis Blackburn looked for a pass on Day, while Rory Elsum-Beaumont, Bradley Short, Jasmine Arnold, Jared Coutts and Blake Webb had a tremendous battle for the minor positions, which continued for multiple laps.

Bradley Short, in his final Junior Sedan race would soon fall off the pace, with continuing mechanical dramas on-board his number nineteen machine. While sitting on third position, Jared Coutts would soon retire from the event with a flat tyre, ending his weekend, which saw him again put up a challenge to some of the states best racers.

Brody Day continued to lead, as Kurtis Blackburn tried everything to get to the race lead. Even with a couple of yellow light stoppages, Day continued to lead, as Jasmine Arnold further back in the field started her charge towards the front. Dane Francis was having a great night at the office and was keeping up with the leading pack. Tanika Webb, David Andreoli, Bradley Chant, Chayse Jackson and Zach Tattam continued to circulate, battling for positions.

With only a handful of laps remaining, it became apparent that the final race of the 2018/2019 JSRA season would go right down to the final lap, as Kurtis Blackburn continued to harass race leader Brody Day. Blake Webb, also in his final Junior Sedan race now found himself in third place, as Jasmine Arnold continued to race with Rory Elsum-Beaumont.

With the white flag flying, a grandstand finish was well and truly in store, as Blackburn looked for any opportunity to get past Brody Day. The duo moved down the back straight side by side, which continued right through the final turn and down the main straight in sight of the finish line. As the checkered flag flew, the winning margin would be 0.029 seconds, with Brody Day just pipping Kurtis Blackburn for the Fab Martinelli Cup and North West Championships. Blake Webb would finish third, ahead of Jasmine Arnold and Rory Elsum-Beaumont.

At the end of racing, Blake Webb would thank his parents and family for their support throughout his seven year Junior Sedan career, as well as the Martinelli family for all of the help to get him to this point in his career. Webb also thank the JSRA for giving him the opportunity to race with some of the best junior competitors and helping him gain the skills required to be one of Australia’s leading Junior Sedan competitors.

This weekend would not have been possible without the support of Jason and Shannan Webb of Webbcrete, along with the Carnavon Speedway who hosted a fantastic weekend of racing action. Last night was also a great opportunity to celebrate the continued contribution that JSRA Life Member, Fab Martinelli gives to our club, as well as the entire speedway scene throughout the nation.

Attention will now turn to the JSRA Trophy Night and Presentation Evening to be held on Saturday June 22nd at the Canning Districts Social Club. All members are reminded that to be eligible for end of season trophies, prizes and tow money, they must be present at this evening. For tickets, please contact Kirsten Derrick via email ([email protected]) by the 10th of June. Adults are $30 and Juniors are $20.

Strelley and Blackburn Win Night One!

jsra-logo-transGeraldton’s Travis Strelley and Perth’s Kurtis Blackburn have claimed top honours in Night One of the JSRA Country Super Series Grand Final and North West Championships at Carnarvon Speedway.

With two heat races and a final for each driver, the first night of competition did not dissapoint, with some great racing action in both divisions of Junior Sedans. Carnarvon’s Jack Buzzard showed great promise winning both heats of the New Star Juniors, after battling throughout the races with Travis Strelley and Tyson Blackburn.

Come the ten lap feature, Travis Strelley would work his way to the front, as Blackburn would again start to wind his car up closing the distance between himself and race leader Strelley. Jack Buzzard would settle for third position, while Jaidyn Turner of Geraldton would sit in fourth.

As the laps slowly ticked off, Tyson Blackburn was knocking on the door of his first JSRA feature win, though Travis Strelley would be up for the challenge and continued to lead. Blackburn would make a lunge for victory on the last turn of the final lap, although could not quite make the pass, leaving Travis Strelley to take the win, ahead of Tyson Blackburn, Jack Buzzard and Jaidyn Turner. Unfortunately Jacob Bell, who contested the heat races could not make the start of the final.

In the Top Star ranks, Jasmine Arnold would start her weekend off in the best possible fashion, recording a dominant victory in heat one of the night. Blake Webb would start his final weekend of Junior Sedan racing in the best way also, winning a drama filled second heat, which saw Rory Elsum-Beaumont have a half lose and get collected from behind, breaking his rear suspension, before Jared Coutts would hit the main straight wall in a mighty way ending his race, as well as that of Kurtis Blackburn who suffered a flat tyre.

The third and fourth heats would be a little less dramatic, although saw some great racing, as Kurtis Blackburn would redeem himself to win heat three comfortably, while Blake Webb had to fight hard with Bradley Short, though would triumph to win his second heat of the night.

Courtesy of his two heat wins, Blake Webb would start the fifteen lap final on the front row with Jasmine Arnold, with Webb leading the field into turn one. Brody Day would also make a great start moving to the front of the field and fighting with Webb and Arnold, as Jared Coutts started his charge from the rear of the field after not finishing each of his heats.

Jasmine Arnold had the bit between her teeth and would soon hit the front, as she fought hard for position with Webb, Day and Kurtis Blackurn would looked quick in his Hyundai Excel. Arnold would continue to lead, before Blackburn would take the race lead and Brody Day slotted himself into second. Webb and Arnold would race for third and fourth, as Kurtis Blackburn started to extend his lead.

As the leaders made their way through traffic, further back in the field Tanika Webb who was having her best night of racing would fight with local, Chayse Jackson, ahead of David Andreoli, Bradley Chant and Zach Tattam. The action in front would soon heat up, as Jasmine Arnold and Blake Webb would almost come together, allowing Coutts to move through for fourth position.

Kurtis Blackburn would prove too strong though, recording another JSRA feature race win ahead of Narrogin’s Brody Day and Blake Webb. Jared Coutts would be rewarded with fourth position after a hard night at the office.

Night Two at Carnarvon Speedway will get underway from 6pm tonight, with the running of the Fab Martinelli Cup for all Junior Sedan competitors. Tonight will also see the crowning of the North West Champion, with points across the entire weekend going towards crowning the champ.

Of course, the JSRA cannot thank Jason and Shannan Webb from Webbcrete enough, for their support of the final round of the JSRA Country Super Series.

JSRA Grand Final This Weekend

jsra-logo-transThe JSRA Country Super Series will come to a close this weekend, with two huge nights of racing to be held at Carnarvon Speedway, 900 kilometres north of Perth.

The event, which is proudly sponsored by Jason and Shannan Webb from Webbcrete in WA’s far north, will see great numbers of Junior drivers battle it out for series points for the final time this season.

On Saturday, drivers will race for all important points, along with trophies for the Top Three finishers in the night’s final. On Sunday, we will see the running of the annual Fab Martinelli Cup, after this event had to be held off earlier this month. Drivers will not only fight for series points and the Fab Martinelli Cup, but also the crown of North West Champ, with points tallying up across both nights to go towards this award.

Although numbers are down in the New Star division, it will be a great opportunity for the drivers to gain some valuable track time and battle it out for the crown of North West Champion.

A fantastic field of sixteen Top Stars have entered for the event, with the majority of racers coming from the northern half of the state. Blake Webb, Kurtis Blackburn and Brody Day will headline the field, after some great results with the JSRA this season. Fierce lady racers Jasmine Arnold and Tanika Webb will also be in the field and will hoping for a great run to end their JSRA seasons.

Geraldton based racers Bradley Short, Rory Elsum-Beaumont, Rohan Thomas, Brock Reid and Bradley Chant will make the five hour drive for this event and will be very hard to beat.

Hometown heroes Chayse Jackson, David Andreoli and Jack Buzzard will fly the Carnarvon flag and will look to use their home track knowledge to gain the upper hand on their out of town visitors.

The other driver to watch this weekend will be Karratha’s Jared Coutts, who qualified for the A Main of the WA Junior Sedan Title at Albany’s Attwell Park Speedway in January. Coutts will look to once again be at the pointy end of the Junior field this weekend.

Racing gets underway from 6pm this Saturday and Sunday night at Carnarvon Speedway. Results will also be posted on the JSRA Facebook Page throughout the weekend.

The JSRA must of course thank our sponsors for this weekend – Jason and Shannan Webb of Webbcrete, as well as Carnarvon Speedway for holding the final round of the JSRA Country Super Series.
