17th December 2009: Country Challenge #2
Scott Elst won the second round of the Smarter Than Smoking Junior Sedan Country Challenge held at the Moora Speedway, on 5th December.
Elst who won the opening round at Northam, has strong competition throughout the night, with Mitchell Hade securing pole for the twelve lap Feature Race. Elst would start on the outside, with Johnny Terriaca, Jack Alfirevich, Danica Brassington and Josh Martinelli filling the first three rows.
On the first lap Josh Martinelli went wide, spun out and was hit by Rebecca Terriaca.
Both cars were out of the race and there was a complete restart. Hade led from Terriaca, Elst and Alfirevich on the restart.
On the second lap Hade went a little wide which let Terriaca put his Charade underneath Hade and both cars spun out. Elst and Alfirevich who were both in hot pursuit performed some excellent manoeuvres to avoid the incident. Hade was deemed at fault by the Chief Steward and was sent to the rear.
On the restart Terriaca took the lead and was passed by Elst just before the line. The rest of the race went without incident, with Elst creating a large lead over Terriaca, Alfirevich, Brassington and Brendan Vanzetti. Vanzetti passed Brassington, which then left Alfirevich and Vanzetti vying for third place. With two laps to go, Alfirevich left a gap for Vanzetti to get passed to take third.
Twelve laps completed, as they crossed over the finish line it was Scott Elst, followed by Johnny Terriaca, Brendan Vanzetti with a mudguard back to Jack Alfirevich who was followed by a fast approaching Mitchell Hade who had made his way back from the rear of the field to fifth place.
Prominent Moora identity
and ex Super Sedan racer Des King said that was some of the best racing he’d
seen for a long time and congratulated the JSRA Smarter than Smoking
drivers.
